General Foot Care Tips for Diabetics..by Julia Franklin
*Walking is good, safe exercise and will improve the circulation
* Do not sit with your legs crossed or walk around barefoot – even in the house. It is important to protect your feet at all times from injury.
* If your eyesight is poor, ask a member of your family or a friend to examine your feet on a regular (preferably daily) basis, but DO NOT let them cut corns and callouses for you. You must see a Chiropodist (Podiatrist) for regular foot care.
* Never use animal wool dressings around your toes as it shrinks and may cut off the circulation.
* Do not use hot poultices.
* If you sit close to a fire, protect your legs with a blanket to prevent damage to the skin.
* Do not use hot water bottles as the heat can be dangerous. Use an electric blanket instead, but remember to switch it off before getting into bed.
* Do not – EVER – use commercial corn pastes, paints or plasters. They can, and do, cause serious damage. Make an appointment with your Chiropodist (Podiatrist) for regular foot care.
* Do not smoke. Smoking impairs the circulation, particularly in persons with diabetes. It can seriously worsen foot and leg problems.
Remember: people with diabetes are at risk of serious infections which can lead to complications such as toe, foot and leg amputations. However, if you take your foot care seriously and have problems checked out immediately the chances of serious complications are greatly reduced. For your peace of mind, always see a professional such as a Chiropodist (Podiatrist) regularly to oversee your foot care regime and give you advice.
